According to the Reuters report from this morning’s Bayreuth Festival press conference, Frank Castorf admitted to having Hitchcock, Tarantino and Jim Morrison on the brain while devising his concept of the Ring Cycle. Although the Wagners are standing by their director, Katharina did strike a somewhat equivocating tone when she said, “It’s not about whether I think the ‘Ring’ is good or bad, it’s important that it’s exciting and people talk about it.”
Meanwhile Norman Lebrecht, on his blog Slipped Disc, queries why Castorf hasn’t including Hitler on his Mt. Rushmore. Earlier, we reported that Castorf said he was uninterested in dealing with Nazis on stage, although he reportedly toyed with the idea of dressing Alberich’s henchmen in concentration camp uniforms.
