Some of you may recall that Anja Harteros backed out two seasons ago of the premiere of Marco Arturo Marelli’s production of Verdi’s Don Carlo. Well, after dazzling audiences in Salzburg and Munich, Harteros will finally tackle Elisabeth at the DOB tonight. I personally had mixed feelings about Marelli’s grim production when it débuted, but that’s no reason to ignore this season’s revival, which boasts an especially promising cast, including Violetta Urmana as Eboli, Hans-Peter König as Philipp II, Dalibor Jenis as Rodrigo and the young American tenor Russell Thomas making his role début as Carlo. At the very least, you can except a full-blooded account from Maesto Donald Runnicles and fine work from the company’s expertly prepared chorus.
We’ll check in with you after the performance.
