After a rather inordinate absence (necessitated by various cultural activities in New York), we’re back! For my first wintertime post, I’d like to pass on some thrilling news I just got from the press department of the Berliner Festspiele. As a prelude to its annual new music festival Maerzmusik, the BF is hosting the only German performances of the much-lauded reconstruction of the original 1976 production of the legendary Philip Glass / Robert Wilson collaboration “Einstein on the Beach.” The traveling production, which has been seen around the world since its 2012 premiere in Montpellier, comes to Berlin in early March 2014 for five performances (1 preview and 4 regular perfs) only, with tickets priced between 25 and 100 euros. If the response in Amsterdam, Paris, New York and Los Angeles was any indication, this limited run should sell out very quickly. Such chances don’t often come around.

“Einstein on the Beach” by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson at the Berliner Festspiele
Only tour stop of this project in Germany was made possible by businesswomen Inga Maren Otto
The Berliner Festspiele are showing the operatic work “Einstein on the Beach” by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson in a reconstruction of the version that premiered in 1976. The Haus der Berliner Festspiele is the only stop on the tour in Germanyand what’s more, it is – at least for now – the conclusion of this project’s international tour. The premiere of the reconstruction, which features choreography by Lucinda Childs, took place on 16 March 2012 in Montpellier and was met with an overwhelming response. The reconstruction has since toured successfully throughout the world with stops in London, Amsterdam, New York, Los Angeles, Toronto, Melbourne, Hongkong and Mexico City.
“Einstein on the Beach” by Philip Glass and Robert Wilson is considered to be a turning point in the history of music theatre. The world premiere in Avignon 1976 counts among the most important artistic events of the 20th century. It broke all the conventions of operatic works and was a thoroughly new, overwhelming artistic departure with a complete synthesis of sound, language, image and movement.
The Berliner Festspiele will be showing the guest performance “Einstein on the Beach” as a prelude to MaerzMusik festival.
On four evening shows from 3 – 7 March 2014, the reconstruction of “Einstein on the Beach” will be presented at Haus der Berliner Festspiele. Inga Maren Otto has made this guest performance possible through a generous donation.
Advance ticket sales start on 11 December 2013. The Berliner Festspiele are offering tickets in four price categories between 25 and 120 euros. On 2 March, a preview will take place for students and those entitled to reductions with tickets priced at 15 euros. Tickets can be purchased at the box office with proof of entitlement.
