Pretty much the only redeeming thing Alvis Hermanis’ disappointing “Tosca,” which opened the Staatsoper season several months back, was a remarkable and assured debut by Anja Kampe in the title role.
Head over to the Deutsche Oper next week for that company’s classic Boleslaw Barlog production. The main draw is star soprano Anja Harteros, a former ensemble member, who will be reprising her much-acclaimed portrayal of Puccini’s famous heroine. The Argentine tenor Marcelo Álvarez should muster the requisite ardor and lyricism for Cavaradossi. Italian bass-baritone Ivan Inverardi rounds off the main cast as the murderous Scarpia.
The ever-muscular GMD Donald Runnicles can do no wrong with the house’s exceptional orchestra. And you can count on the DOB’s outstanding chorus to deliver a bone-chilling Te Deum.
Performances on January 15 (7:30pm) & 18 (6pm)
