Elektra

Kirsten Harms’ 2007 production of Elektra was originally performed along with Vittorio Gnecchi’s little-heard Cassandra, a 1905 opera that may have inspired Strauss’s Sophoclean attempt several years later. It was a bold concept, even if it didn’t present Gnecchi’s work in the best possible light.

Over the past decade, Elektra has been coming back solo in Harms’ elemental production dominated by black sand and littered with animal skulls and bones. Minimalism is usually the best approach for Strauss’ intensely psychological one-act, and Harms’ grim, menacing staging, while showing its age a bit, still packs a punch.
