Nabucco (DOB)

British director Keith Warner is best-known for staging Wagner, but here he takes a stab at Verdi’s earliest success in this visually arresting yet conceptually muddled production set in some subterranean lair. The stage rotates and the chorus scurry about endlessly. Who’s the old man who appears periodically and always at crucial moments? The prophet Jeremiah? Moses? The god of the Hebrews himself? The Babylonians are dressed to look stylish and futuristic while the Jews  are vaguely 19th Century bourgeois, except for the tallises that seem a more shtetl-like touch. They might just be onstage to remind us what a Jew looks like. The production’s most intriguing elements are never fully developed, like the printing press behind the veil of the holy of holies that might allude to the printing of the Babylonian Talmud. In all, a less than satisfying production, though certainly in improvement over the company’s previous Nabucco by Hans Neuenfels. That inscrutable mess featured Chassidim as the second-temple Jews and bumblebees as the Babylonians.

In the fall 2013 performances, none of the singers truly wows, although the chorus does fine work and orchestra, led by the young Italian conductor Andrea Battistoni, grabs the listener by the neck.
